Default Out of Memory Error (PhotoVista Stitching Software)

NOTE: This memo applies only to Out of Memory Errors while stitching photos in the PhotoVista software (or when trying to launch the PhotoVista software). If you are seeing an Out of Memory error while in the VisualTour software, CLICK HERE to read an alternate memo.

Some people encounter an "Out of Memory" error while trying to stitch photos using PhotoVista or when trying to launch the PhotoVista software.  The problem is caused by the presence of two competing versions of the same file.  To eliminate the error, follow these steps to copy the SHLWAPI.DLL from \windows\system to the PhotoVista directory (usually c:\program files\mgi\photovista).
  1. Open Windows Explorer (click START-RUN and type EXPLORER.EXE)

  2. On the left side of the screen, double click the Windows directory (folder).

  3. With the Windows directory expanded, look for the system subdirectory.

  4. Double click the system subdirectory, and look on the right side of the screen for a file called SHLWAPI.DLL.  If it is not there, Windows might be hiding it from you.  At the top of the Explorer screen, click VIEW-FOLDER OPTIONS (Windows 95, 98) or TOOLS-FOLDER OPTIONS (Windows ME and 2000).   On the VIEW tab, uncheck "Hide file extensions" and in the Hidden Files area, choose "Show All Files."  Click OK, and look again for the file.

  5. Single click the SHLWAPI.DLL file.

  6. From the EDIT menu, choose COPY.

  7. On the left side of the screen, scroll up to locate the Program Files directory, and double click it.

  8. With the Program Files directory expanded, look for the MGI subdirectory, and double click it.

  9. With the MGI subdirectory expanded, look for the PhotoVista directory, and double click it.

  10. From the EDIT menu, choose PASTE.   Click YES to overwrite the existing version.
