Default Error 4: Record Does Not Exist

The VisualTour software stores its photos, captions, and other information in data files rather than as separate JPEG and TEXT files. It maintains internal pointers to keep track of which captions in its MEDIA.DAT file match up with which photos in the MA00001.DAT and other files.  If one of those internal pointers is pointed to a record that does not exist, the error 4 is displayed.

How does this situation occur? It is usually the result of file corruption and could be caused by a bad section on the hard drive, although even a good hard drive will sometimes lose a file from time to time. What can you do about it? If you have a backup from before the error began, you can restore the backup, but keep in mind that you might be storing several tours in one single data set, so restoring an older set of data might cause you to lose some tours in the process of rescuing others.

Each folder in the VisualTour software keeps its own data set, so regardless of whether or not you have a backup made, copy any good data you have to another folder or a new folder in the VisualTour software. Once you have rescued anything you can, delete the original folder by clicking the FOLDERS button at the top of the screen, then selecting the bad folder, and clicking the DELETE button.

If you need to create a new folder, follow these steps.

  1. Open the VisualTour software. If necessary, cancel the tour guide.

  2. Click the FOLDERS button at the top of the screen.

  3. Click the NEW button.

  4. Type in a folder number (or a name like My Tours) up to 12 characters, and click OK. You will have the opportunity to type a longer name later.

  5. VisualTour will show you the location where it is placing the folder on your hard drive. Click OK.

  6. Choose to "Create Blank Folder," and click OK.

  7. Type in a name for the new folder, and click OK. This name can be up to 30 characters or you can use the shorter name you type in step 4.

  8. Click SELECT to exit the Folder Manager screen.

To copy any good tours from one folder to another, follow these steps.

  1. From the Edit Menu, choose COPY/MOVE.

  2. On the left side of the screen, choose the old folder from the drop down list at the top of the copy/move screen.

  3. On the right side of the screen, choose the other folder.

  4. On the left side, single click on the tour you want to copy, then click the blue arrow that points to the right.

  5. Choose to include All Images, then click OK. The tour is copied. If the error 4 comes up, then that tour contains some bad data. You might still be able to copy a few individual surviving photos instead of the entire tour. You will see a photo list at the bottom of the screen. Try copying just some photos to see which ones are still valid.
