Question Client Software

I'm migrating to a new computer.

Can I download the VT software or do I have to install the old CD version and install the patch?

If I want to carry over any of the data, what's the process for doing that?

I wasn't able to post this at Client Software forum by the way?

Thanks,

Charlie

Lightbulb Re-Loading On New Computer

Charlie:

We installed a new hard drive. Here are the steps I followed to restore the VT application:

(1) Reinstall original program. You will need the E-mail that contains your User Name, Serial Number, and Confirmation Code. (Hint: Save this in the CD case, along with the disk.)

(2) Go to www.visualtour.com. (Do not use the shortcut on your desktop.)

(3) Select SUPPORT.

(4) Select DOWNLOAD VERSION 4.1 EXE.

Hope this is helpful!

Paul

Question reinstall VT on new computer

After installing VT from disks and vt41up.exe from the what are the steps to capture the data from the old installation in 1, 2, 3 format?
Can the sample tours provided by VT be retained?

Default Possible solution

I could not wait for the weekend to be over to proceed so I did a workaround that seems to work OK. Hopefully VT staff will endorse it or point out errors and a better way. The steps were as follows
Moving visual tour to an new computer or new drive in an existing one when the old version is available

1. Install VT fresh

2. Perform VT4up update

3. Confirm that everything works OK except your old visual tours are missing.

4. Locate newly installed vtour directory (probably C:\Program Files\vtour\resident)

5. Change name of the “resident” directory located above to residentx (by right clicking it and changing its name) to C:\Program Files\vtour\resident xx

6. Locate the “resident” directory on the former VT installation on old computer or drive.

7. Copy the entire former “resident” directory. [If you are on a network that accessed the old computer or if the old drive has been installed in the new computer as an extra drive copy the directory. If the old program is on the old computer that is not networked to the new computer, burn the old resident directory to a CD and put the CD into the new computer’s CD drive and copy the directory].

8. Paste the old “resident” directory under the newly installed vtour directory to create a replacement C:\Program Files\vtour\resident .

9. Open the new visual tour confirm the old tours are present by checking the “open existing tour” choice and opening some of them. The tours that were in the old computer should be available for editing, copying to new visual tours etc.

10. The Files\vtour\residentxx is still present as left over detritus that can de deleted in the future after it is confirmed that the program is working as desired. If a problem occurs or you want to revert to the original installed Visual Tour condition rename the new “resident” subdirectory “ residentbad” and rename “residentxx” to “resident” to restore the original VT installed condition

Good luck
Mike

Good detective work, but I need to add one more step if you want the VisualTour staff to endorse your method. If all your tours are stored in your Residential Listings folder, then your system works.

Let us assume, however, that you have a folder for each neighborhood or a folder for 3 bedroom homes and another for 4 bedroom homes. Common sense says that you will copy those folders as well, but common sense has one flaw. The index that tells the software where to locate all the folders is stored in a directory called MASTER.

So the right answer is copy not only residential and any other data folders, but also the one called MASTER. If you are not sure which folders contain data, copy any that have files with a DAT extension in them. Those all contain data and will include MASTER.
